One-a-Day...for the Heart: Our Advocate

Nothing else will suffice when you need a good attorney to navigate the court system. The most brilliant friends, relatives, counselors, doctors, and professors cannot accomplish what an attorney can in a court of law. Legal representation by an attorney gives us access to laws and judicial rulings to protect and defend us that we are otherwise unable to obtain.

Our Heavenly Father sits on His Throne in the High Court of Heaven. Righteousness and justice are the foundation of His Throne, according to Psalm 89:14 (NLT). From His Throne, He issues decrees and rulings that affect all of creation, including powers, principalities, nations, rulers, governments, towns and communities, and our personal lives.

God presides over heaven's court; He pronounces judgment on the judges, we are told in Psalm 82:1. That means that God, our Father, “stands as chief director, the Supreme Magistrate, and He judges among the gods, the inferior magistrates, and both the legislative and executive power of princes is under His eye and hand” (Matthew Henry’s Commentary). As the Righteous Judge, He makes rulings based on His righteous law.

That’s a huge problem for us since we have all sinned and fallen short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23). None of us can stand for even two seconds in the High Court of Heaven without legal representation. Jesus Christ is exactly that. John writes, in 1 John 2:1-2 (NASB), My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous; and He Himself is the propitiation for our sins; and not for ours only, but also for those of the whole world.

We have an Advocate with the Father. THAT is music to the sinner’s ears! An Advocate of the Court is “one who assists, defends, or pleads for another; one who renders legal advice and aid and pleads the cause of another before a court” (Black’s Law Dictionary).

The word is derived from the Latin advocare “to summon, call to one’s aid.” Jesus Christ is our Attorney in the High Court of Heaven, and He sits at the right hand of the Father, pleading our case. Therefore, He is able, once and forever, to save those who come to God through Him. He lives forever to intercede with God on their behalf (Hebrews 7:25 NLT).

As long as we have breath in our body and have applied the blood and forgiveness of Jesus Christ through faith in Him, our Advocate defends us before the Supreme Magistrate of Heaven. He pleads with the Father to render a “Not Guilty” verdict on each of us.

Additionally, as we petition the Father for daily requests and needs, our Advocate continues to support and defend us; in fact, He lives FOREVER to intercede with God on our behalf—no matter how simple or complex our case is.

Our Attorney in Heaven doesn’t get tired. He doesn’t charge by the hour, and He’s on the clock forever. He’s an awesome representative of the righteous law of God. He personally paid all our court fees, fines, and bail bonds. What an Advocate!
